Peek into the Podium: Danny McGeehan

Today, we have Danny McGeehan, a player who’s been around a for a while. He’s got a little issue with a bit of faction hopping, and though he’s been playing Grymkin for a significant time. I’ve seen him run both Cryx and Skorne to wins as well. Enjoy!

I am currently piloting The Dreamer and The Heretic as my list pairing in Grymkin. Both of these are currently being played in the Dark Menagerie theme force which primarily brings resilient, hard hitting warbeasts to the table backed up by Gremlin Swarms and shield guards. Both lists are slow and usually take the alpha, but hit back with a surprising amount of power.

Here they are if you’re curious:

I have been playing Grymkin as my primary faction (with short vacations into Skorne and Cryx) since they were released at Lock and Load earlier this year. What has kept me playing the faction is my belief that they play 50/50 games into almost anything as long as you are smart with the arcana you choose and master the placement intensive playstyle required of them. However, everything in the faction is costly and a single moment of carelessness will dump you into an attrition hole you may not be able to dig yourself out of (and trust me… the only thing this faction does is attrition).

Right now I am playing Pat Dunford’s England’s WTC pairing in preparation for ATC this January. I do not believe this is an optimal pairing because it leaves me vulnerable to the lists that crack beast bricks and can deal with Gremlin Swarms (e.g., Abby2, Bradigus, Una2), but in a team environment I am hoping to be able to dodge those. For those looking for a normal SR pairing, I would highly recommend choosing between The Dreamer/The Child/The Heretic in Dark Menagerie and Old Witch3/The Wanderer in Bump in the Night.

If you’re looking to beat Grymkin I have a few pieces of advice for you:

  1. Deal with the Gremlin Swarms
  2. Capitalize on the fact that your opponent can only play one arcana a turn
  3. Try to focus fire the heavies. There is nothing more demoralizing that getting a Skin and Moans down to 6 HP only to have it heal back up on corpses or after you’ve proc’d Sacrifice (an Arcana)
  4. Finally the most important piece of advice I can give you is to NEVER kill Sir Mouse (The Dreamer’s small-based Phantasm). He is a friendly, harmless mouse-creature/onlooker and the destruction of him will only lead to your army’s slow and methodical annihilation (also, I probably won’t shut up about it for the rest of the game).

If you’re thinking about playing Grymkin or want to discuss ways to beat them, I’m always happy to talk shop. Just ask me at any of the Brawltimore events I attend.
