Peek Behind the Podium: Brad Park

Coming in first at the third tournament, Brad park is an interloper into the Brawltimore meta, coming down from the north to swoop in and steal victories. Playing Cryx, which he has as long as I’ve seen him play, he’s known for taking unorthodox and strange paths to victory. This tournament, though, he decided he was not. Enjoy!

I was asked to provide a write up on my lists I used this past Saturday and after complaining a lot, I agreed. Below are both lists, I think they complement each other well and when discussing them should be considered together.

The first thing to point out, Deneghra1 is bullshit.

The errata and changes she’ll receive from the most recent CID process is 100% justified and while I’ll be sad to see her go it is only better for the health of the game. Though with those changes not here I unashamedly brought her as a great compliment to Lich2.

I was playing Skarre1 Dark Host and Lich1 Ghost Fleet prior to this pair and while it was powerful there were two main complaints I personally had about the pair that I believe this pair handles better. First off, while Ghost Fleet is immensely powerful I felt like the northeast had too much in the way RFP tech’d lists and often felt to have a dead drop in my list pair that telegraphed me into Skarre1. Also beyond that is often times Lich1 himself would be a better caster for what I needed but the list around him would suffer. Also Skarre1 while being an offensive powerhouse and being able to keep those same models she turns to 11 alive is astounding she lacks control elements to her kit, other than killing your opponents things.

With all that said the first change that was made was changing Skarre1 to Lich2. Those changes saw nearly the same load out of models but a change in battlegroup choices. The two Desecrators provide a tremendous amount of self sufficient control with accumulator and the scathers they leave behind. Those combined with the clouds Lich2 can put out create a lot of board control that you can leverage into strong scenario play. The one thing the list can struggle with is that I don’t have a mat fix for the banes in the list, which is something Skarre1 provided in spades. While there are tradeoffs and both have convincing strengths I like the control aspects Lich2 offered.

As for the compliment I moved myself off of Lich1 Ghost Fleet into Lich1 Scourge and found success with it though found myself not thrilled about a limited solo selection for him. Once the Blood Mistress and the other Satyxis solos come out from the CID I’ll be right back aboard that hype train, assuming the last we saw of them in CID is how they actually manifest. Regardless, I changed Lich1 to Deneghra1 as she doesn’t need much of anything to be good and in MK II I played a list with her that was a one of each unit of cavalry and a unit of Satyxis Raiders. While that load out doesn’t exist in any one theme, Scourge of the Broken Coast still offers that insanely fast army, with the bonus of ambushing models to really push the scenario pressure by being able to contest their scenario elements from difficult angles.

The Deneghra1 list is designed to fight into the mirror, Grymkin, and Menoth, which is what I think the Lich2 struggles into the most. The inclusion of Eilish to be able to remove Rebuke if playing against the Heretic or Crippling Grasp is playing the mirror is valuable far and above the five points he costs. Also the double Gunslingers and max unit of Blood Witches with the Hag that ambush can cause a lot of problems in the mirror if the other player would be fielding Ghost Fleet and also potentially causes problems for a Testament army which, I think, is the army that causes the most amount of problems for any Cryx list currently in the meta.

The last thing not talked about with this list, and the first point I made, Deneghra1 is bullshit. This next statement is in no way meant to insult any opponents I played against, though in some games, due to terrain in the middle of the table, and being able to defensively score scenario elements, unless I make a mistake on the table, there isn’t a large window of opportunity for my opponent. Using this list I’ve won games without making attack roles. Run into place, scoring my elements and contesting theirs, feat with Deneghra, win on scenario by turn 3. Her feat changes are very much deserved and will make games back into games. This similar accomplishment could have been done with Haley2 prior to her most recent errata and it just isn’t okay.

All in all, I look forward to being able to play in the Invitational event in April, and hopefully I can still do well without Deneghra1 holding my hand and comforting me in the difficult moments of life.
